Chef Abdel Elatouabi’s Bio
Chef Elatouabi’s passion for food began at a young age. As a boy growing up in Morocco, Abdel would spend many hours at his father’s side sourcing the best the area had to offer. Early Sunday mornings, they would be the first to meet the fishermen as they brought in their catch. He knew the vendors in the medina by name and could tell you where to find the best olives, finest spices and freshest mandarins.
To Chef Elatouabi, traditional Moroccan hospitality is more than just a catch phrase in a travel brochure. He fondly remembers his mother’s great pride in making guests comfortable in her home. He has taken his passion for food and respect for hospitality and honed it into an art.
Abdel’s career in the hospitality industry is anything but boring. While in Morocco, he worked as Food & Beverage Manager with the Rabat Hilton ensuring 5 star service in it’s 4 restaurants and convention centre. Some nights, there would be a wedding for 400 hundred in one banquet hall, an offsite catering for a Saudi prince, a seafood buffet in the restaurant, and a party in the bar – all on the same night. Abdel organized banquets and dinners for such dignitaries as the Sultan of Brunei, Queen of Thailand, King Abdellah of Jordan, the late King Faisal al Saud of Saudi Arabia, President Bill Clinton, Koffi Annan and even James Brown and Prince and the Revolution.
Chef Elatouabi was also honoured to serve as the Executive Chef to His Royal Highness Moulay Rachid, the Crown Prince of Morocco. Chef Elatouabi took great care in presenting luxuriously simple and delectable cuisine for the Prince and his guests.
In Vancouver, Chef Abdel has won critical acclaim for his restaurants – BravoBistro, Le Marrakech and, now his latest creation, SoL Sun Belt Cookery. The food is simple, and authentic. He takes great pride in creating flavours that compliment the best of the region.
